Sosua Dominican Republic

Sosua, Dominican Republic is located approximately 25 km east of Puerto Plata, and less than 10 km east from Puerto Plata International Airport.  Sosúa is a small but bustling self-contained and fully functioning town on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic and is a favorite tourist and full-time residential destination favored by Germans, Englishmen, Canadians, Americans and so many others.  Residents in Sosúa enjoy the mix of nationalities and one quickly makes friends with others who have chosen this unique Dominican seaside town to live.

The town of Sosúa itself is made up of two distinctly different areas – one at each end of the beach and town:  Los Charamicos (western side) and El Batey (eastern side).

At one end of the beach is El Batey, an area with residential streets, gardens, restaurants, shops, and hotels.  Sosúa has taken off as far as being of interest to those who wish to make it there home and has come a long way from the single desolate main drag of 20 years ago.

In the El Batey section of Sosúa, many villas have been newly constructed and sit companionably alongside long-built private homes, condos and apartments of every size, design and description.

At the other end of Sosúa Beach is Los Charamicos, Los Charamicos is predominantly occupied by Dominicans who make their living through fishing, tourism jobs or small businesses.  Los Charamicos in Sosúa is a typical Dominican community and a big contrast to its neighbors in El Batey.  Here, one will find tin-roof shacks, vegetable stands, chickens in the backyard and warm and friendly Dominicans everywhere.  There are very inexpensive Sosua hotel in this area where you can get a place to sleep, hot water, good food and great beaches at a reasonable price.

Sosua Beach ( Playa Sosúa ) in the town of Sosúa is located on a crescent-shaped bay and is a picture postcard, perfect, public beach.  Here, on Playa Sosúa you can sit and while away the day, watching the sun and cooling off in its crystal clear, and calm waters.

Sosua Bay is perhaps one of the Dominican Republic’s most popular beaches and has crowds of people visiting almost every day of the week.  Hungry?  No need to move.  Vendors regularly prowl the beach with many tidbits and offerings to eat such as shrimp, bananas, fruits, empanadas and kipi (local snacks).
 
Restaurants and food are plentiful on Sosua Beach, however if you prefer to eat a whole meal, the fellows who rent the chairs will run and get you what you would like to eat and drink at one of the many small restaurants along the back of the beach.  Fresh fish with fried banana and a little salad, fresh lobster, chicken, rice and beans, goat, or sandwiches can be ordered, delivered and paid for with reasonable prices attached.

Sosua Dominican Republic is a great place to live for families, singles, young couples, retirees as there is a wide and varied range of living accommodation from low-cost condominiums and apartments to single family homes, and large luxurious villas. The town of Sosua offers numerous restaurants, bar, activities and 5 absolutely beautiful beaches.  Sosúa has one of the finest beaches in the whole of the Dominican Republic called Sosúa Beach which is actually a cove that is sheltered by coral reefs, is about ½ mile wide and has crystal clear turquoise water and a strip of soft, white sand.

Sosúa is definitely a tourist attraction and there are really good, reasonably priced and well accommodated hotels in and around town and a selection that will please anyone.

Sosúa is a walking town!  Walking all around Sosúa is how you get to know the neighborhood and be able to locate one of the many small restaurants or shops along the way.  And, it has an abundance of restaurants! 

Sosúa is self-contained and has every variety of business that one might need to live there successfully.  Amongst the business that are currently offering their services are lawyers, accountants, architects, banks, car rental and sales, computer sales and repair, dentists and clinics, fumigators, doctors and clinics, pharmacies, real estate agencies, telephone services, transportation, web designers, yoga instructors, supermarkets, restaurants and bars.  No need to go anywhere else!  It is all within walking distance of the ‘downtown’.

Othe activities that one can enjoy within the immediate area of Sosua include deep sea fishing, horse back riding, a number of interesting beaches as well as the fact that the city of Pueto Plata with everything you need, is within a very reasonable distance away.

Night time entertainment is varied and plentiful in Sosua with several discos in both areas as well as theme bars and of course, its many great outdoor restaurants.

The Dominican Republic is world-known and respected for merengue and is a country that has a deep musical appreciation. The annual Dominican Republic Jazz Festival attracts a line-up of high quality jazz performs and concerts are heldin Sosua, along with Cabarete and Puerto Plata in october every year.
